A rising tide - tech for social change

Social media is growing and becoming a dominant force in tech-savvy (or at least tech-enabled) communities around the world.

However, most innovation in the social media environment has little, if anything, to do with social change. Witness the massive supply of useless "widgets" and applications in social networking sites like Facebook, most of the stuff that goes up onto YouTube, or networked games that are just as bad as the old non-networked ones.

There are, however, growing uses of new technologies and social networking for social change and development applications. ReadWriteWeb has a brief and interesting overview, and the MobileActive.org is another favorite.
